On the California side of the Mojave Desert, Lancaster is the second largest city. The city is separated from Bakersfield by the Tehachapi mountain range (to the north) and from the Los Angeles Basin by the San Gabriel Mountains (to the south.) Lancaster is located around 70 miles north from Los Angeles. It is the 9th fastest growing city within the United States, having gone from 37,000 in 1977 to its current people of 145,074.

The city of Lancaster puts a huge priority on local business and encourages growth by offering low priced land and less red tape as an incentive. Growth has quickly increased over the years as distribution centers for companies consisting of S, Michaels and Rite Aid have developed.
The Lancaster Redevelopment Agency is responsible for attracting various companies to the city. It has recently attracted several retail and dining businesses to Lancaster Town Center as well as Front Row Center. The Agency has designated five locations as industrial and business parks, which are Fox Field Industrial Corridor, Enterprise Business Park, Lancaster Business Park, North Lancaster Industrial Center, and North Valley Industrial Center.
One major goals for development in the city is to continue the downtown revitalization plan. There are some historic buildings and a lot of contemporary amenities currently within the downtown area consisting of a performing arts center and a library. The Lancaster Old Town Site (LOTS) is responsible for the renovation of business facades in the Old Town area.
The BVLD, is a revitalized stretch of Lancaster Boulevard which runs about one mile which was just finished in the year 2010. It is located between 10th street west and sierra highway.
