During the year 1882, Canadian engineer, George Chaffey established the Ontario Model Colony development. The city was named after the province Ontario, Canada, by George, William, and Charles Chaffey. It is the 18th largest city in Southern California with a population of approximately 170,373 individuals.
The economy of Ontario was historically shaped due to it having a reputation as a health resort. The local farmers planted orange and lemon groves, as they thrived within the cities rocky soil. Ontario is the home of Ontario Mills and used to be the home of Ontario Motor Speedway until it was demolished in nineteen eighty.
Prior to the war, the General Electric plant was a major trade within the area. A huge influx of settlers caused in part by the expansion of the Southern California defense industry, made Ontario their home during and after the second world war.
Warehousing and service industries now dominate Ontario's financial system as the manufacturing trade has diminished. The most notable manufacturing company is the Maglite co-corporation, that makes flashlights. The New Model Colony idea which the city has created plans to take southern Ontario, which is presently an area dominated by dairy farms and agricultural farming, and turn it into different residential homes, town centers, and industrial and business parks.
Shiekh Shoes and the Famous Stars and Straps clothing company was established in Ontario.
