With a population of 280,000, Stockton is considered the 13th largest city in the state of California. Sixty miles to the west is San Francisco Bay, and eighty three miles west is San Francisco itself. The city is in a fairly middle location, with Sacramento located only 45 miles to the south. The San Joaquin Delta waterway unites the San Joaquin and Sacramento Rivers to San Francisco Bay.
With a major concentration on revitalizing the downtown area, the city of Stockton has just undergone a huge economic expansion. At the gateways of the city, Stockton is constructing several entertainment and retail centers. In 2003 the City Centre Cinemas, the sixteen screen movie theatre, was developed.
Originally, the economy within Stockton was nearly exclusively agriculturally based. Nevertheless, as time has passed the city has diversified, with telecommunication and manufacturing plants becoming more common. The strong ties with agriculture would slowly become more and more important while the focus on trying to look for a renewable energy increases.
Low-cost land, as well as the proximity to the interstate and state, are among the main reasons why companies like Golden State Lumber Company, Duraflame and Pac-West Telecommunications have built their regional operations within Stockton. The city is also great for those companies based on renewable energy; among the largest receivers of wind turbines is the Port of Stockton. Even with the bio diesel and ethanol plants built close to the Port, there is still more than two thousand acres of free space available
The city of Stockton is now currently developing green sustainable resources. The High Schools as well as different educational institutions are working together with the local governments so as to help in the education process handling renewable energy. The hope is there is a quick solution to the declining oil supply.
