Point Molate was the location of the last active whaling station in the county, that was closed in the year 1971. The Prohibition during the year 1919 caused Winehaven, amongst the world's largest wineries, to close down.
All through the Second World War, the economy of the city was supported mainly by shipbuilding and several industrial industries. As time passed, the city be a major port, shipping well more than twenty million tons of goods per year, nearly all being the oil and petroleum variety. A major oil refinery, run by Chevron USA, is located in the city and has a capacity of fifteen million barrels.
Two of the biggest employers within the city are the Social Security Administration, that hires over 1000 individuals, and the Kaiser Pemanente's Richmond Medical Center Hospital, which is located in downtown Richmond. A video game animation studio, Treeskunk Production, is situated downtown, as in Bay View recording studio, where artists comprising Smash Mouth record their hit records. Galaxy Desserts is likewise operated and run within Richmond.
Vetrazzo is a business which has won numerous awards for its green initiatives, is situated in the previous Ford Assembly Plant. They take recycled beer bottles and old traffic lights and creates wonderful glass countertops.
